i'm really and truely on the island this week hooray.  we switched from big tourist catamerans to rigid hull rafts, and boy what a great difference in snorkeling and whale watching - the zodiac type rafts hold18-34 passengers, all with a clear view, and go way faster than the big boats.  on one trip we went all around Lanai island and saw a pod of 6 competeing males escorting a mom and calf.  they were showboating, doing pec slaps, chin slaps, surges, and head butting. really really fantastic! tomorrow we're booked for a raft trip to the lava tubes and sea cave area of Maui, then off to drift the wall on Molokini.  

Just now, right off our lanai, a mom and calf drifted by for half and hour, with the baby practicing his tail slaps. he must have don 30 in 3 different segments.  Several times he over balanced and fell over backwards instead of slapping - he was so cute!
 Man, am i going to  hate going back to work on Friday.

 Well, one of my twins has a bit of extraneous activity in it, so the PTB say I need to have a "lumpectomy" so they can study it further. Oh joy. I'm set for the 20th May as an outpatient, in and out in 4 hours, can you believe it? Oh for the good old days when you'd get a 4 day stay with nursing care; now you need to go home and find your own caregiver - TG for my lovely dtr, who is flying down for a week to help me out.
